Let's look at how financial status... whether you have a ton of it or barely any at all... fundamentally reshapes your human cognition. Because it challenges this deeply ingrained assumption we all have about money.

The brain is a resource-weighted engine. When the Survive Until Friday app requires 99% of your BPU, it must terminate non-essential background processes, like social ladder climbing, building a wealth network, and hanging out with white collar criminals hard to do on the reg.

We tend to think of wealth strictly as this measure of purchasing power. Like just an external wand. But wealth actually acts as an intense filter of most of the rest of the world.

It's not your financial IQ, it's your financial status that alters your neurological mental structures. It physiologically changes how you understand the world, how you construct your own identity, and remarkably, how your brain evaluates the basic humanity of everyone around you.

To understand how that filter gets built, we really need to look at what happens when the brain is deprived of that resource. 

Before we even talk about opulence, luxury, and abundance, we have to talk about scarcity. Because I'm here to outline a biological reality that is, quite honestly, staggering. When someone is managing a severe lack of resources, it triggers this psychological phenomenon known as tunneling.

We often frame poverty or a financial squeeze as just an economic math problem. But neurologically, it is a massive mental strain. When you are managing scarcity... and the research notes this applies to a strict lack of money, or even just an extreme lack of time... the mental effort required to navigate that deficit creates a biological state of tunneling. The brain treats scarcity as an immediate, life-threatening crisis. The time and money twins are always there to punch you in the face. Nothing else matters but avoiding them by expending all your energy and resources on defense.

Think about the last time you were desperately late for a flight, or an extremely important appointment, or realized you forgot your child at Home Alone and you're already on the plane. You weren't thinking about your five-year career plan or what you were going to make for dinner when you eventually get home. Or maybe even reading this amazing piece of writing instead of doing whatever you should be doing.

Your brain shuts absolutely everything down except the command to get to the gate. And that is what financial scarcity does, and it happens every single day.

Just like that panic dash through the airport, the brain unfortunately won’t politely ask if you… do you mind if I shut down those extra unconscious tasks, or would you prefer to set a time?

Nope siri… it forcefully explicates immediately if not sooner, everything from short-term memory. Your executive function actually gets overridden. It’s asking: “How do I pay this electric bill by 5 PM?” Or “Can I afford enough gas to get to my shift?” Or “Am I going to be able to eat tomorrow?”

This essential prioritization consumes so much mental energy that researchers measured a temporary situational drop in mental acuity. That is where the 14-point IQ drop comes from. It's like trying to pull your life out of one of those Chinese finger traps. The more you try to escape the worse it is.

The internal mechanism realizes it's in a critical state, so it aggressively kills non-essential unconscious tasks just to keep the sausage from overheating. It shuts down the “long-term investment app” to keep the “just survive today app” running.

The real tragedy of that biological response is that it depletes the exact cognitive tools a person needs to escape their situation. 

Because abstract thinking, patience, planning... are all metabolic luxuries. They are luxuries of a fully functioning mind. The capacity cost of scarcity forces this hyper-focus on immediate survival, which creates a nasty and viciously self reinforcing feedback loop.

Society frequently observes this tunneling behavior... people making short-sighted financial decisions... and they misinterpret it as a fixed character flaw… or simply a lack of intelligence. We end up judging a biological state of exhaustion as a moral failure. By doing so we miss the underlying mechanism entirely.

The mental drain of scarcity doesn't mean someone is fundamentally less capable, it means their mental energy is currently overridden by survival instincts… by the literal need to survive.

If a lack of money acts like this mental drain that drains our mental energy, the intuitive leap is that having an abundance of money must do the opposite, right? It should free the mind. With all your survival needs met, your brain should have infinite unconscious for tasks and mental energy to be open and empathetic.

But looking at the research, that is not what happens at all. Instead of freeing the mind, the abundance actually builds mental walls.

This is the cognitive fortress. The literature shows that as income and social status rise, individuals become structurally insulated from the lived experiences and the suffering of others. Which makes sense on a practical level, but it goes deeper than that.

Foundational research into the empathy gap reveals something fascinating about our neural architecture. As wealth accumulates, there is a measurable decrease in the brain's empathy system. An actual neurological decrease.

For instance when high-status individuals are shown images or videos of people in lower socioeconomic brackets experiencing distress, their neurological response is demonstrably muted compared to average earners.

This is largely tied to resource independence. Also known as dildo brain.

From an evolutionary standpoint, the human brain devotes energy to reading social cues and maintaining empathy because we rely on our tribe for survival. You know the tropes.

So… if you're struggling, you deeply need the goodwill of your community. You have to be hypersensitive to facial expressions, social norms, and reciprocity… all that jazz.

But when you possess massive financial capital, you can essentially buy your survival.

You can purchase safety, convenience, assistance, and compound all that. So the brain, which is always trying to save effort, just learns that it no longer needs to heavily monitor the emotional states of others. It just removes that responsiveness right out of existence.

To suggest that luck played a role is existentially irritating. Therefore, the brain invents a moral certificate. If you are wealthy, you are competent. If you are wealth-deficient, you are a moral failure and aren’t worthy.

This is not cruelty… it is a clinical method for reducing cognitive dissonance while walking past a homeless encampment as much as it is for white collar crime.

Which brings us to a concept of the idiosyncrasy credits.

Because you no longer rely on the tribe, you start to feel this psychological entitlement to bypass the tribe's rules. Because the rules are essentially social contracts designed to manage shared resources. 

Your cognitive fortress creates a perception that those shared contracts no longer apply to you. You have enough capital to insulate yourself from the consequences. Even for breaking not-so-minor or sometimes major social norms.

This is where I have to mention the famous luxury car crosswalk studies as it perfectly illustrates this phenomena.

The classic finding was that drivers of expensive luxury vehicles were significantly more likely to cut off pedestrians at crosswalks compared to drivers of economy cars. Yeah, it became the poster child for the idea that wealth inherently reduces ethical behavior.

So, does having a few extra zeros in your banking account automatically turn you into a rule-breaker?

It's not that wealth will permanently break your moral compass, it just makes the needle much less sensitive to the pull of social expectation. Unless the environment forcefully demands it, that is.

If the brain isolates itself to protect that reality and dials down its own empathy to conserve energy, how does someone inside the fortress handle the cognitive dissonance of seeing people who are struggling? How do you look at the people caught in the cognitive tunnel of scarcity and justify the divide?

Easy, you justify it through an intensely powerful psychological mechanism called attribution bias, which fuels what researchers term meritocratic hubris.

Before we get to meritocratic hubris, let's just define the attribution bias really is for anyone who hasn't taken a psychology class in a stones age.

What exactly is the brain misattributing? In short, it is the Fundamental Attribution Error. When we succeed, our brains naturally attribute that success to our own internal traits… our intelligence, our grit, our incredible work ethic. But when we fail, we attribute the failure to external circumstances… the market was bad, the test was unfair, the referee was stoned. 

Yet, we do the complete inverse for others. If someone else fails, we assume it's because they are lazy, stupid or incompetent, we completely ignore their external barriers.

It's the automatic doors metaphor. If you are born into high status, or you experience fortunate timing or geographic luck, you walk through life encountering automatic doors. You approach an opportunity, it slides open, and you walk right through without breaking your stride. And over time, the people walking through those automatic doors completely stop seeing the mechanism controlling the doors. They forget about the sensors. They just think they're special.

They begin to attribute their forward momentum entirely to their own forward energy. They construct a narrative where the door opened solely because of who they are and how purposefully they were walking, while totally ignoring the fact that someone else is standing in front of a locked steel door prying at it with a pin-sized crowbar.

By categorizing the wealth-deficient as both incompetent and cold, the brain performs a neurological bypass. It stops processing their suffering in the prefrontal cortex and starts processing them in the same region used for inanimate objects or waste products.

This makes the “Just World” hypothesis much easier to maintain… you aren't ignoring a human, you are simply navigating around a faulty piece of the infrastructure.

We humans doing are terrified of randomness. The idea that life is largely dictated by chaotic luck and systemic advantage is just too existentially irritatingly uncomfortable. So the brain of a high-status individual invents a meritocratic narrative. Success is no longer seen as a combination of hard work and highly favorable circumstances, it becomes a personal moral certificate.

If success is a moral certificate, then failure is a moral indictment.

That explains why it is nearly impossible for those at the top of the economic ladder to offer relevant advice to average earners. Their personal understanding of the world has effectively edited out the existence of failure outside of one's control. Bad luck, systemic barriers, biological capacity costs... those concepts simply do not compute within their view of the world.

That internal narrative has bled outward into how society collectively evaluates human worth. It has fundamentally altered the threads of our social fabric. Have you heard and do you believe “rising tides raises all boats?” What kinda bullshit on a spoon is that!?!

First off, most of us are out at sea without a boat, some without even life jackets and secondly, the rising tides drowns more people each year who are just trying to keep their head above water!

The stereotype content model is about how we subconsciously judge people. How does that model actually work in the brain?

Well, the stereotype content model is based on evolutionary mental shortcuts. Heuristics. When early humans encountered a stranger, their brains had to make split-second survival calculations. It asked two primary questions. First, what are the intentions of this person? Do they want to help me or harm me? That is the warmth axis. Second, are they capable of acting on those intentions?

That is the competence axis. So even today, our brains instantly evaluate every person we meet along these two intersecting lines of competence and warmth.

The research shows that money acts as a severely mental distorting lens across these axes. As individuals accumulate wealth and status, society collectively perceives them as highly capable, intelligent, and competent.

They are simultaneously evaluated as significantly less warm, less trustworthy, and less approachable. So they are seen as effective but cold.

The darker side of this evolutionary shortcut lands on the people with fewer resources. If the wealthy are competent but cold, where do the poor land on those axes? Tragically, they are frequently placed in the lowest quadrant… low competence and low warmth. They are stereotyped as neither capable nor well-intentioned.

This specific placement on the matrix facilitates a deeply troubled psychological bypass. It's not a character flaw. It is a calculation. When you can afford to pay whatever the fine, even the price of the social contract violation, the law ceases to be a moral boundary and becomes merely a transaction fee.

For the internally wealthy, a “No Parking” sign is simply a “Premium Parking” sign.

Elevated social status combined with this stereotyping can lead to the literal objectification of those with fewer resources. Meaning we literally stop seeing them as fully human. We process them differently on a neurological level.

It turns human beings into tools to be utilized or obstacles to be navigated around, rather than complex subjects with their own internal lives and intrinsic worth.

This again, reduces cognitive dissonance. If poverty is purely a personal failure of competence, as the meritocracy myth suggests, and they lack warmth anyway, then the suffering of the less fortunate is justified. It makes it psychologically easier to insulate yourself from any sense of social responsibility.

We've spent a lot of time looking at the structural extremes... the crushing 14-point IQ drop of scarcity and the isolated, objectifying fortress of extreme wealth. But really, most people are somewhere in the middle.

They aren't worrying about their next meal, but they aren't buying a private island either. How does this perceptual filter impact the average earner navigating everyday life?

One of the most pervasive modern psychological crises documented in recent years is money dysmorphia. This is where the digital age just completely overrides our mental defenses.

Money dysmorphia is a state where digital exposure to curated luxury creates a massive, often painful disconnect between your objective financial health and your subjective feelings of inadequacy.

Historically, if you wanted to know how you were doing financially, you just looked at your immediate neighbors. If your farm yielded a bit more grain than the guy next door, and your roof didn't leak, your brain said, “Okay, we are secure. We are doing well.” The comparison was local and bounded.

Not today, the upward social comparisons ties average earners to the lifestyles of global outliers.

Yeah, you’re carrying a device in your pocket that allows you to peer into the cognitive fortresses of the 0.1% all day, every day… but the psychological goalposts of “enough” just moves to a new impossible extreme, completely detached from a person's actual wealth or stability.

Like being caught in a ratchet… you can move in one direction (tighter), but every time you try to back out, the gear clicks and locks you into your new, more cramped position.

In moderation and a bit like jealousy for an ex that propels you to get your shit together, at least on the outside, it can be an incredible engine for progress. So why are researchers labeling normal ambition as a psychological toxin? Do they have nothing better to do? No, no they don’t, that is what they do. They label stuff.

Anyway, ambition itself isn't the toxin. The phenomenon becomes toxic when it triggers what researchers identify as “financially contingent self-worth.” You are effectively attempting to buy back your “humanity” with debt/credit card. Mostly credit, which is essentially just debt anyway.

This is a highly vulnerable psychological state where your fundamental self-esteem... your actual belief in your right to take up space in the world... becomes inextricably tied to your bank balance or your visible status symbols. It ceases to be about motivation toward a goal and becomes a constant grinding fear of falling behind those fucking Jones, those assholes!

The brain ties its cortisol response, its stress hormone, directly to an impossible arbitrary social and media standard. When your core self-worth is threatened, you panic. That is biology/psychology 101. Cavemen, tribe, evolution, bla, bla, bla…

Thing is, chronic anxiety does lead to highly irrational behaviors in the middle class.

When individuals perceive a widening gap between their everyday reality and the curated digital reality of the impossibly rich, they often abandon cautious, logical financial planning and start risk taking to make up for their shortfall.

We see that all the time now. We’re seeing a documented rise in high-stakes risk-taking, aggressive retail trading, gambling on anything and everything sites, and the accumulation of unsustainable consumer debt. Puffier and puffier jackets, bigger and bigger trucks, smaller and smaller bags of questionable quality selling for six figures. All mostly to project an image that bridges the parasocial gap. To prove to the “digital tribe” that we still have value… at least for now.

Compounding this is a biological mechanism you probably know of…  it’s the hedonic treadmill, which facilitates lifestyle creep. The human brain is incredibly adept at adapting to its circumstances. Too good!

A good analogy is sensory adaptation. Imagine walking into a coffeeshop that smells strongly of freshly squeezed coffee. For the first two minutes, the scent is overwhelming. It's all you can focus on. But after ten minutes, your olfactory system literally stops registering the smell. It fades into the background and unless you focus on it you are no longer aware of it. The brain wants to free up bandwidth for new smells, new threats, like silent flatulence in an elevator… the worst.

The brain sac does the exact same thing with a pay raise or a new house. You get the promotion you've been dreaming of, and for two months, it feels incredible. You feel secure. But in rapid succession the brain converts those once-novel luxuries into essential baselines. You definitely ain’t going backwards but nothing feels good anymore.

The brain stops “smelling” the smell of burning money. Your internal baseline for satisfaction is constantly adjusting… constantly in flux.

Suddenly you absolutely need the artisanal high-pressure-press coffee or you feel like a can of smashed assholes all day… you need the upgraded car, and subsequent lease… you need the bigger apartment just to feel normal and not a stagnant loser even though you live better than anyone in most of history and probably most of the world right now! Pthsst… ya whatever.

But… this treadmill does desensitizes us to our own current wealth.

A middle-class individual today might have objectively secured a life of profound abundance and safety compared to historical standards, or even compared to their own childhood. But they are rendered entirely blind to it by their shifting baselines and those upward digital comparisons.

We are exhausting ourselves running on a treadmill that's forever speeding up just to stay where we are. It may only be incrementally fast, but the distance between us and happiness never actually closes in because the machine just speeds up. You are forever halving your distance but will always have more to go for another halfway for infinity, never reaching your destination… as programmed.

We have engineered a society where the poor are too cognitively, physically, politically, emotionally and taxed to plan an escape, the rich are too neurologically insulated to give a shit and the shrinking middle class is too busy running on a treadmill of lifestyle creep to realize they are the ones powering the gym’s lights for everyone else and paying the rent to the rich.

Because of the financially contingent self-worth narrative, this constant pursuit leaves individuals viewing interpersonal relationships, leisure time, and community connection as secondary.

The view of the world of wealth doesn't just dictate what you buy, it dictates what you value. It warps what you care about, it distorts your empathy and shields you from the misfortunes of others as you extract from them at every possible opportunity.

It forces an individual to prioritize the acquisition of status symbols over the very things that actually generate long-term psychological wellbeing. But who gives a shit about that when you can legally steal?

To pull all the disparate threads together here, I hope this posits how a lack of resources is not a character flaw, or a reason for pity, but a severe biological bandwidth tax. It can trigger a cognitive tunneling effect that can temporarily rob a person of up to 14 IQ points just to survive the day. 

We’ve contrasted that with the cognitive fortress of abundance, showing how extreme wealth alters our sensitivity to social feedback, decreases empathy, and fuels a meritocratic hubris where people attribute their systemic luck entirely to their own internal energy, completely disregarding the imposition of their own tiny ridiculous EGO in what is an unfathomably chaotic universe.

Crucially, we examined how these cognitive distortions impact the majority of people caught in the middle. Through money dysmorphia and the biological reality of the hedonic treadmill, the digital age has infected every class with a perpetual sense of relative deprivation. The digital grass is always greener in everyone else’s backyard.

Financial status truly acts as a world view viewing at the world. It determines not only our purchasing power, but how much peace we are capable of granting to ourselves and in doing so, and more importantly, how much humanity we have left to grant to others.

This leaves us with a final thought…

If our brains are biologically wired to adapt to whatever wealth we gain, any plateau we reach, any goal we set for ourselves… but is constantly resetting our baseline of satisfaction regardless… and our digital environments are permanently shifting the goalposts of what is “normal” to an impossible extreme of curated luxury... are we not engineering a society where we can afford more than any generation in human history, but are permanently neurologically incapable of ever feeling satisfied?

From an actuarial standpoint, the system is working perfectly. It has successfully converted human empathy and peace of mind into measurable human efforts and endless possible exploitatives. 

Just something to chew on the next time you open up your banking app.

Elian was a master of the Spire.

His life was defined by the High Ceiling. His apartment was a cathedral of potential... thirty foot windows and a view that spanned three kingdoms. In the Spire, there was no limit to what one could achieve. One day you might be a merchant prince, the next a celestial architect. The air was thin, expensive, and electric with the hum of ambition.

But the Spire had a secret, a secret that no one spoke of... and that was… the floor was built out of uncertainty.

To live in the Spire was to live in a state of perpetual flight. Even with the reinforced glass and the triple-sealed frames, Elian often felt a faint, phantom breeze rising from the abyss below.

Residents never could truly trust the weight of their chairs. On quiet nights, a settling floorboard did not sound like wood… it sounded like a snapping of a bone. Elian lived in the magnificent space above the world, knowing that a single misstep would send him through the fragile floor into the void.

He was successful, wealthy, and utterly exhausted by the effort of remaining buoyant only with growing effort.

Across the Great Bridge lived Silan, a man who had retired to the Basin. Silan’s home was the embodiment of the High Floor.

The ceilings in the Basin were low... heavy timber beams that you could touch by reaching up a hand. There was no room for grand tapestries or soaring ambitions. You could not become a god in the Basin. But the floor was made of solid, ancient granite. It was four feet thick and rooted into the bedrock of the world.

Silan had the posture of a man who had once worn a necktie and looked down on the clouds, but his hands, calloused now from working the earth, poured the tea steadily. There was no tremor in his reach.

“How do you breathe in here?” Elian asked, his eyes darting to the small windows. “There is no room to grow. No space to climb. Don't you feel trapped by the limits of this place?”

Silan set the heavy iron kettle down. The sound was absolute.

“You spend your life looking at the ceiling, Elian, wondering how much higher you can go,” Silan said. “But your neck must be tired. In the Spire, you are a bird that is forbidden to land. You fly until you die of exhaustion.

Silan stomped his boot on the granite floor.

“I don't look up anymore,” Silan continued. “I don't need to. I know exactly where I stand. I can sleep in the dark without wondering if the floor will exist when I wake up. My life is small, yes. It is limited. But it is unbreakable.”

Elian walked back across the bridge that night. He did not look at the shimmering needles of glass or the vast, terrifying vacuum of the horizon. Instead, he stopped at the center of the span and rested his palm flat on the mossy granite of the parapet. He felt the ancient, rooted vibration of the earth through the stone. It did not move. It did not sway.

He felt a sudden, violent loathing for the view. He didn't want to fly anymore. He wanted to stand on something that wouldn't break.

The next morning, the Spire had one less resident, and the Basin had a new apprentice stonecutter. Elian found that while he could no longer see the stars, he could finally close his eyes.

The human brain is essentially a three-pound electrified jellybean that has spent the last several millennia trying to convince itself it is the protagonist of a grand epic saviour of all life rather than just a biological accident.

We humans are nothing more than sophisticated meat computers running hardware designed for a world where winning meant the difference between eating a mammoth and having a beautiful rug for your cave or… get eaten, gourd, or trampled. Off to a good start aren’t we?

One of the most effective tricks in the old brain bag is the sensation of winning. It does not matter if you have successfully navigated a complex financial merger or merely managed to throw a crumpled piece of paper into a bin from across the room. Your internal chemistry treats them both the same, use the same regions and pathways, and they don’t know the difference, they just follow the rules.

The sensation of victory is less about the objective value of the prize and more about the biological machinery that rewards the successful navigation of the environment, hence, rewarding its own behaviour.

When you are about to win at a meaningless game of cards or a trivial office debate, your brain lacks the discernment to realize the death defying stakes are nonexistent. It simply detects a potential success and floods your neural pathways with dopamine.

If you win, endorphins and endocannabinoids are responsible for that feel good feeling of “winning.” This chemical release serves as a reinforcement signal. It tells the brain that whatever strategy was just employed should be repeated, as it feels really good.

In a prehistoric context, this applied to finding water, hunting, and successfully mating… in a modern context, it applies to beating someone at a game of monopoly or finding the shortest line at the grocery store. The reward system is indiscriminate. It prioritizes the neurochemical bath over the logical utility of the achievement.

Your reward system has yet to receive the update that informs it that falling off a digital leaderboard is not a life-death situation, even though that’s exactly what it FEELS like.

Today, these mental gymnastics have evolved into sustaining a feeling where the human ego is able to perform its most impressive stunts.

To understand why winning feels so potent, one must look at the way the brain manages its internal economy.

For the purposes here, the primary currency is dopamine, a neurotransmitter that is frequently misunderstood as a reward molecule.

In reality, dopamine is a motivational whip. It is the chemical signal of anticipation. When you are on the verge of a win, your ventral tegmental area and nucleus accumbens are working overtime. They are not celebrating… they are ensuring you stay focused on the task at hand so that you do not wander off to look at a particularly shiny rock, or that cave girl/guy you’ve been eyebrowing before the job is done.

The reason… the pursuit, feels more intense than… the achievement, is rooted, again, in survival efficiency. Because of course it is.

Here’s where shit gets weird. If the brain provided its highest chemical peak only after a task was completed, you would have zero motivation to perform the difficult labor required to get there!

Instead your tricky, tricky lil brain floods your system during the maybe phase with dopamine.

This it turns out, is the biological “how” behind your persistent persistence.

It creates a state of heightened arousal that sharpens your focus. The world slows. A man's focus narrows then. The world around him falls away. Only the enemy is in his sight. The wind is a whisper. His heart is a drum. His breath is a shallow rasp. His mind is a calm, dark lake. He is no longer a man. He has become a part of the spear… Oh shit, sorry, started quoting 300 there. Sorry about that.

The point was… you are essentially being bribed by your own grey bean to stay interested in a world that is frequently frankly, tedious.

The most significant flaw in this system is the Reward Prediction Error. Your brain is a sophisticated statistical engine that is constantly making bets about the future. It predicts, that’s what it does.

If you expect a win and you receive it, your dopamine levels do nothing. They don’t need to. It’s like receiving your paycheck and realizing it’s exactly what you expected. To go further, if you got the same $$$ gift card for Christmas that you did the last two years in a row… ¯\(ツ)/¯ The brain treats an expected victory as a non-event. It is the neurological equivalent of a shrug.

However, if you win when you were not certain of the outcome, the brain perceives a positive prediction error. This triggers a massive spike in dopamine because the system has encountered a strategy or an environment that yielded more than anticipated.

This is why the perspective and mental gymnastics mentioned earlier are so vital. To keep the rewards coming, you must find ways to maintain a sense of uncertainty or to constantly move the goalposts. Without the possibility of failure, the chemistry of success becomes inert.

To harness these prehistoric reflexes for modern benefits, you must adopt the mindset of a casino architect. You are both the player and the house. The goal is to design an environment where your work triggers the same addictive loops as a slot machine, but instead of losing your mortgage, you actually complete your projects.

Step 1: The Principle of Intermittent Reinforcement, Gamify the Mundane with Variable Rewards

The most effective way to keep a biological system engaged is to reward it unpredictably. 

If you reward yourself for every successful work session, you will quickly become bored. The dopamine will flatline because the reward has become a certainty and you may have a bad habit or two. To fix this, you should introduce a variable schedule of awesomeness.

If you know exactly when a reward is coming, your dopamine will flatline. To keep yourself engaged in tedious but necessary work, you must introduce uncertainty.

Use a Random Reward Generator.

Instead of promising yourself a coffee after finishing one report, write down five potential rewards of varying value (a 5-minute break, a favorite snack, 15 minutes of gaming, a walk, or nothing at all!).

After completing a milestone, use a dice roll or a random number app to determine which reward you get. The maybe and the what factor keeps the anticipation high, ensuring your brain stays focused on the task in hopes of hitting the jackpot… the reward.

The uncertainty of the maybe will keep your anticipatory dopamine levels significantly higher than a guaranteed payoff ever could.

Step 2: The Micro-Victory Loop

You must exploit the brain's inability to distinguish between the scale of wins. Because a success state is a success state, you should break your complex goals into sequences that are so small they are nearly impossible to fail.

Each time you check off a tiny task, you provide your ego with a bit of evidence that you are in fact  “winning.” This maintains a baseline level of positive reinforcement. If you set your sights too high, you risk a negative prediction error when the massive goal is not met immediately when expected, which leads to a dopamine crash and subsequent procrastination.

Step 3: Hierarchy Anchoring

The human brain is obsessed with numbered lists… oh wait I meant… status… status because, historically, status equaled safety. You can trick this circuit by framing your solitary work as a competitive endeavor. This is the success of fitness trackers and leaderboards.

By tracking your own metrics and attempting to beat your previous high scores you engage the social comparison machinery. You are essentially competing against a past version of yourself for an imaginary crown. Imaginary crown? Yes. Yet the chemical reward is entirely real.

You don’t even need to be socially validated for this to work.

The best part about this is studies show the Pomodoro technique is a pro level technique for actually learning.

Step 4: The Next-Step Bridge

The most dangerous moment in any pursuit is immediately after a win.

This is when the… consuming system takes over from the… wanting system. You feel a brief period of satisfaction followed by a sharp decline in motivation. Which is your deciding dopamine levels.

To avoid this, do not allow a project to truly have an ending per se, in your mind. Before you finish a session, you define and initiate the first step of the next phase. This keeps the anticipatory circuit engaged, preventing the post-win lethargy from setting in. You are essentially tricking the brain into thinking the hunt is still ongoing. But of course roll that dice when completed the session.

By applying these tactics, you are not merely working harder… you are conducting a coup against your own evolutionary limitations. Otherwise you are just taking a system designed for hunting mammoths and sabertoothed animals and repurposing it to sit at a desk all day and type, do repetitive labour, or manage complex workflows. 

There is humor in this situation and it is found in the realization that we are all just monkeys who have learned how to press our own dopamine buttons. Once you understand the mechanics of the button, at least you can ensure that pressing it actually leads to something useful.

Unfortunately, we’ll all just click the button on the next…
